Branch-Circuit Installation & Cable-Tray Pathways
This course develops hands-on branch-circuit installation skill in a critical-facility context, building on the Code foundation from National Electrical Code I. Students install conduit, cable-tray, and busway pathways typical of a data-hall electrical room, terminate branch-circuit conductors into panelboards and power distribution units, and verify installations against NEC Article 392 cable-tray fill and support-spacing requirements. Labs progress from bench-scale conduit runs to a simulated overhead busway and cable-tray pathway representative of a data-hall aisle. Students perform continuity, insulation-resistance, and polarity verification on completed circuits and document each step in a work-record system. The course emphasizes correct tool use, torque discipline, and lockout/tagout procedure on every energized-adjacent task. It prepares students for the branch-circuit and pathway installation portion of an apprentice electrician's work process schedule and for BMS and controls wiring coursework that follows.
What you'll be able to do
- Install rigid and EMT conduit runs meeting NEC Article 342/358 support-spacing requirements.
- Install cable tray sections and calculate cable fill against NEC Article 392 tables.
- Terminate branch-circuit conductors into a panelboard and a power distribution unit to specified torque values. Safety-critical
- Lock out and verify de-energization of a branch circuit before beginning termination or repair work. Safety-critical
- Install an overhead busway section and torque bus-plug connections to manufacturer specification. Safety-critical
- Verify a completed branch circuit using continuity, insulation-resistance, and polarity tests. Safety-critical
- Select and size a raceway pathway for a mixed power and low-voltage cable run while maintaining required separation.
- Troubleshoot an intentionally miswired branch circuit and document the fault-finding process. Safety-critical
- Document a completed pathway and circuit installation in the SAVERN Assets work-record system with photo evidence and as-built notes.
- Calculate voltage drop for a branch-circuit run and select a conductor size to keep drop within a stated design limit.
- Bond a metallic cable tray section to the equipment grounding system and verify continuity end to end. Safety-critical
