This course introduces the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) as the governing standard for electrical installations in critical-facility and general commercial settings. Students learn to navigate the Code's structure and apply requirements for branch circuits, overcurrent protection, grounding and bonding, box and conductor fill, and wiring methods common to data-center electrical rooms. Emphasis is placed on Code research method rather than memorization: locating applicable articles, resolving conflicts between general and specific requirements, and documenting the basis for an installation decision. Laboratory sessions pair each Code topic with a bench exercise using mock panels and conduit trainers so that Code interpretation is tied to a physical installation outcome. The course also introduces state apprentice electrician registration requirements as a prerequisite condition for trade work and lays the Code foundation used throughout the electrical low-voltage course sequence. This course does not confer a license; it is related instruction supporting registration and hour-of-work documentation administered by the state licensing or apprenticeship board of record.

What you'll be able to do

  1. Locate the applicable NEC article and section for a given installation scenario using the table of contents and index.
  2. Calculate branch-circuit conductor ampacity and required overcurrent protection for a stated load.
  3. Size an equipment grounding conductor and a grounding electrode conductor for a given service. Safety-critical

  5. Select a wiring method appropriate to a given occupancy and environmental condition under NEC Chapter 3.

  7. Verify box and conduit conductor fill against NEC Chapter 9 tables for a given raceway assembly.
  8. Document a completed rough-in inspection checklist correlated to the applicable NEC articles for AHJ submission.
  9. Log apprentice related-instruction hours in the format required by the state apprentice electrician registration record.
  10. Interpret an NEC amendment or local ordinance adopted by a hypothetical AHJ and identify where it supersedes the base Code.
  11. Isolate and lock out a mock panel circuit before conductor termination work begins. Safety-critical
