This course covers low-voltage control wiring and point-to-point commissioning for building management system (BMS) and data-center infrastructure management (DCIM) platforms. Students wire analog and digital control points -- temperature and humidity sensors, differential pressure transmitters, current transformers, and dry-contact relays -- into controller panels representative of an EcoStruxure-class BMS front end. The course covers control-loop wiring practice, shielded cable grounding to prevent electrical noise on analog signals, point checkout and commissioning documentation, and busway-tap metering integration referenced in the Institute's OctoPod busway procedure. Students commission a small controls panel end to end: wire, point-map, checkout, and produce a commissioning record suitable for an owner's operations manual. The course does not cover BMS graphics or sequence-of-operations programming, which are addressed in the DCO department; it is limited to the electrician's scope of physical point wiring and termination.

What you'll be able to do

  1. Wire an analog temperature/humidity sensor point into a BMS controller input using shielded twisted-pair cable.
  2. Wire a dry-contact digital input/output point and verify state change at the controller.
  3. Install a current transformer on a branch circuit for BMS power monitoring without opening the CT secondary while the primary is energized. Safety-critical
  4. Lock out and verify de-energization of a control panel circuit before beginning point wiring. Safety-critical
  5. Terminate a busway tap metering connection referenced in OCT-PMP-BUSWAY-A and verify metering accuracy against a reference meter. Safety-critical
  6. Produce a point checkout record for a commissioned control panel showing each point tested and its as-found value.
  7. Troubleshoot a noisy or drifting analog point caused by improper shield grounding or cable routing near a power source.
  8. Document a completed BMS/DCIM controls panel commissioning package for the owner's operations manual.
  9. Configure network addressing (BACnet MS/TP or IP) for a controller so that it is visible to the DCIM front end.
  10. Escalate a control-point discrepancy between field reading and DCIM display to the responsible system per a defined escalation path.
