Water-free AI data center cooling: define, design, and verify it

Water-free should mean no routine draw from the community water system for heat rejection. Reaching that standard requires a closed process loop, an appropriate heat-rejection design, and a complete site water balance.

Separate chip cooling from heat rejection

Direct-to-chip or immersion cooling moves heat away from processors efficiently, but the heat still has to leave the facility or be reused. A complete design follows energy from the chip through coolant distribution and heat exchangers to dry coolers, storage, or a beneficial-use system.

Use a whole-site water balance

A credible water-free claim includes cooling, humidification, cleaning, fire protection, domestic use, commissioning fills, maintenance losses, and emergency conditions. It distinguishes routine consumption from one-time fill and identifies the source for every category.

  • Specify the closed-loop fluid inventory and expected makeup rate.
  • Show design performance at local peak dry-bulb temperature.
  • State whether water is used in backup or extreme-weather modes.
  • Meter and publish the operating categories that support the claim.

Efficiency is a climate-specific tradeoff

Dry heat rejection can reduce water demand while changing electrical consumption and equipment size. The right comparison uses the same IT load, weather file, redundancy standard, and annual operating profile so communities can see the real trade rather than a single favorable design point.

Is liquid cooling the same as water-free cooling?

No. Liquid cooling describes how heat is collected from the equipment. Water-free describes the site's external water demand. The heat-rejection system determines whether routine water consumption remains.

Can a closed loop still need makeup fluid?

Yes. Maintenance, leaks, sampling, or component replacement can require limited makeup. Those quantities should be included in the site water balance.

What should be published after the site opens?

Metered water use by category, cooling-system performance, any emergency-mode consumption, and the operating boundary used for the water-free claim.
