This course develops the skills required to install, terminate, and certify twisted-pair copper structured cabling systems in a data center or telecommunications room, following ANSI/TIA-568 and BICSI Information Transport Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM) practice. Students pull cable within manufacturer pulling-tension and bend-radius limits, terminate RJ45 and punch-down connections to T568A/T568B wiring patterns, dress and label cable in accordance with ANSI/TIA-606 labeling conventions, and certify finished links using a Fluke DSX-series cable certifier against Category 6A permanent-link and channel test limits. Topics include horizontal and backbone cabling topology, telecommunications room and equipment room design per TIA-569, pathway and space requirements, and troubleshooting common test failures such as wire-map faults, excessive insertion loss, and marginal NEXT. Laboratory sessions use the Atom Lab Bench's BICSI copper kits and Fluke DSX certifiers on live patch panels and mock walls. This course prepares students for the BICSI Installer 1, Copper (INST1) certification examination.

What you'll be able to do

  1. Pull a 4-pair UTP cable run through a pathway without exceeding manufacturer pulling-tension or bend-radius limits.
  2. Terminate a Category 6A UTP cable to an RJ45 plug or jack using the T568B wiring pattern.
  3. Certify a Category 6A permanent link using a Fluke DSX-series certifier against TIA-568.2-D limits.
  4. Diagnose and correct a wire-map fault (split pair, reversed pair, or transposed pair) identified by a certifier test.
  5. Label a cable, patch panel port, and faceplate jack in accordance with a facility labeling scheme consistent with ANSI/TIA-606 conventions.
  6. Dress and manage cable in a patch panel and cable tray using standard bend-radius and separation practice.
  7. Interpret a telecommunications room or equipment room layout against TIA-569 pathway and space requirements.
  8. Distinguish horizontal cabling from backbone cabling topology and identify the correct cabling type for a stated link.
  9. Interpret a Fluke DSX certifier autotest report to identify the specific parameter causing a link failure.
  10. Complete a BICSI Installer 1, Copper (INST1) practice examination covering ITSIMM-based objectives.
  11. Verify NEC and facility separation and support requirements for a copper cabling installation in a plenum-rated space. Safety-critical
