Critical Facility Operations I — Day Shift Fundamentals
This course introduces day-shift critical facility operations across the mechanical, electrical, and building-management systems that support an AI factory data hall. Students conduct rounds using the SAVRN OctoPod platform's building, HVAC, CRAH, chiller, busway, and switchgear preventive-maintenance procedure references, log readings into a building management system, and identify out-of-tolerance conditions against setpoints. Topics include the mechanical yard (chillers, cooling towers, pumps), the electrical distribution chain from utility service through UPS/battery energy storage and busway to the rack, environmental monitoring per ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal guidelines, and basic Uptime Institute Tier operational practices. Laboratory sessions use the Atom Lab Bench's BMS/DCIM consoles, rack-and-stack cabinets, and mock panels to simulate a live data hall round. Students practice reading a single-line diagram, executing a documented walk-down using an OctoPod PMP reference, and escalating an abnormal condition through the correct chain of command. This course establishes the operating knowledge base assessed by the Uptime Institute Accredited Operations Specialist program.
What you'll be able to do
- Execute a documented building walk-down using the OCT-PMP-BUILDING-Q reference procedure.
- Log and interpret rack-inlet temperature and humidity readings against ASHRAE TC 9.9 recommended and allowable envelopes.
- Perform the OCT-PMP-CRAH-Q quarterly CRAH inspection procedure on a bench-mounted or simulated air-handling unit.
- Perform the OCT-PMP-CHILLER-M monthly chiller inspection procedure and record operating parameters.
- Trace the electrical distribution path from utility service through UPS/battery energy storage and busway to a rack PDU using a single-line diagram.
- Perform the OCT-PMP-SWITCHGEAR-Q quarterly switchgear inspection procedure. Safety-critical
- Perform the OCT-PMP-BUSWAY-A annual busway inspection procedure including thermal imaging review. Safety-critical
- Verify the OCT-PMP-MEGABOX-Q quarterly modular power skid inspection and record findings in the CMMS.
- Perform the OCT-PMP-HVAC-Q quarterly HVAC system inspection procedure across an air-cooled data hall zone.
- Classify an operational condition against the Uptime Institute Tier concurrent-maintainability requirement for the facility's rated Tier.
- Escalate an abnormal facility condition discovered during rounds through the correct notification chain within a stated time. Safety-critical
- Complete a full round of the Uptime Institute Accredited Operations Specialist (AOS) knowledge domains as a self-assessment.
