This course introduces the physical layout, hazard classes, and life-safety systems of a critical facility data hall and its supporting mechanical and electrical yard. Students complete the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry outreach curriculum, covering walking and working surfaces, electrical hazard recognition, personal protective equipment, hazard communication, and emergency action planning. Laboratory sessions cover lockout/tagout procedure under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, arc-flash boundary recognition per NFPA 70E, fire classification and portable extinguisher use per NFPA 10, confined space awareness, and safe use of ladders, lifts, and hand tools in a data center environment. Students practice incident reporting, near-miss documentation, and escalation procedures used across the SAVRN OctoPod platform. The course establishes the baseline safety competencies required before any student enters a live or emulated mechanical, electrical, or IT space in subsequent coursework.

What you'll be able to do

  1. Apply a personal lockout/tagout procedure to an isolated electrical circuit. Safety-critical
  2. Select and don personal protective equipment appropriate to a stated arc-flash PPE category. Safety-critical
  3. Classify a fire hazard scenario and select the correct portable extinguisher. Safety-critical
  4. Identify walking-working-surface hazards and fall-protection requirements in a data hall and mechanical yard.
  5. Interpret a safety data sheet to determine required handling and PPE for a chemical used in facility operations.
  6. Document a near-miss or incident using the SAVRN Assets incident-report workflow.
  7. Escalate an active safety hazard to the correct authority using the facility emergency action plan. Safety-critical
  8. Verify a confined-space entry permit before authorizing entry to a below-floor or vault space. Safety-critical
  9. Complete the OSHA 10-Hour General Industry outreach card requirements.
