This course covers the installation, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm and clean-agent suppression systems in data-center environments. Content is built directly from NFPA 72 (National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code) Chapter 10 (Fundamentals), Chapter 12 (Circuits and Pathways, including Class A/B designations and pathway survivability), and Chapter 17 (Initiating Devices), together with NFPA 2001 (Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems) requirements for total-flooding agent concentration, pre-discharge alarms, and lockout valves in occupied electrical spaces. Students mount and terminate initiating and notification devices, wire and test Class A and Class B signaling line circuits, program and commission a fire alarm control panel, and inspect a clean-agent total-flooding system for a raised-floor data hall. The course maps directly to the NICET Fire Alarm Systems Level I content domains — installation, maintenance, and submittal/layout literacy — and prepares students for supervised Level I work-history documentation. VESDA-class aspirating smoke detection is introduced as the pre-action standard for white-space early warning.

What you'll be able to do

  1. Mount and terminate initiating and notification devices on a fire alarm training panel per manufacturer instructions.
  2. Wire a signaling line circuit in a Class A configuration and verify single-open fault tolerance per NFPA 72 Chapter 12. Safety-critical

  4. Perform periodic testing of initiating devices and notification appliances per NFPA 72 inspection and testing procedures.
  5. Diagnose and replace an impaired or deficient initiating device identified during system testing.
  6. Read a fire alarm shop drawing to determine device type, quantity, and location prior to installation.
  7. Calculate the minimum clean-agent quantity for a total-flooding hazard volume per NFPA 2001 design-concentration requirements.
  8. Inspect a clean-agent total-flooding system for pre-discharge alarm, lockout valve, and warning-sign compliance in an occupiable space. Safety-critical
  9. Configure an aspirating smoke detection (VESDA-class) unit for early-warning coverage in a raised-floor white-space zone.
  10. Practice job-site safety procedures during fire alarm installation work per NICET Level I safety requirements. Safety-critical
  11. Document an inspection, testing, and maintenance report suitable for the authority having jurisdiction.
  12. Distinguish pathway survivability levels and select the correct level for a fire alarm circuit routed through a critical facility.
