This course develops the physical server hardware installation, configuration, and maintenance skills required in a data center, aligned to CompTIA Server+ (SK0-005) exam objectives. Students rack and stack 1U/2U/4U server chassis, install and torque rail kits and cable management arms, install and seat memory, storage, and RAID controller components, and configure RAID arrays for stated redundancy and performance requirements. Topics include server power and redundant power supply configuration, out-of-band management (IPMI/BMC/iDRAC/iLO-class interfaces), firmware and BIOS/UEFI update procedures, server-level thermal and airflow management, and hardware troubleshooting using POST codes and diagnostic LEDs. Laboratory sessions use the Atom Lab Bench's rack-and-stack cabinets and 1U/2U/4U chassis to complete a full rack-and-stack build following the SAVRN OctoPod Rack Stand-Alone procedure, including asset tagging and torque-specification cable and rail hardware installation. This course prepares students for the CompTIA Server+ certification examination.

What you'll be able to do

  1. Install a server rail kit and mount a 1U/2U/4U chassis into a rack cabinet per the OCT-PMP-RACK-SA procedure.
  2. Install and seat server memory, storage drives, and a RAID controller in a server chassis.
  3. Configure a RAID array to meet a stated redundancy or performance requirement.
  4. Configure out-of-band management (BMC/IPMI-class interface) for remote power control and console access.
  5. Update server firmware and BIOS/UEFI settings following a documented maintenance window procedure.
  6. Diagnose a server hardware fault using POST codes and diagnostic LED indicators.
  7. Configure redundant power supply units and verify failover behavior under a simulated power-input loss. Safety-critical
  8. Manage server-level airflow and cable routing to prevent thermal recirculation in a hot/cold aisle configuration.
  9. Apply asset tagging and physical security controls to a newly racked server per the SAVERN Assets and site security procedure.
  10. Develop a basic server backup and disaster-recovery plan element for a stated workload.
  11. Complete a CompTIA Server+ (SK0-005) full-length practice examination covering all 4 published domains.
