This course covers on-site power generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS) as deployed at AI-factory and data-center sites, including diesel and natural-gas standby generators governed by NFPA 110, paralleling switchgear, and lithium-ion BESS safety governed by NFPA 855 and manufacturer thermal-runaway mitigation requirements. Students perform generator starting-and-transfer sequence verification, monthly exercise testing, fuel system inspection, and BESS state-of-charge and thermal monitoring interpretation. Because lithium-ion BESS thermal-runaway response differs fundamentally from a conventional electrical fire and from fuel-based generator hazards, this course treats fire department pre-incident planning and BESS emergency response as a distinct competency area rather than folding it into general electrical safety. Every competency involving an energized generator bus, paralleling gear, or BESS module handling is treated as safety-critical and evaluated by a licensed qualified person.

  7. Execute a BESS emergency-response and evacuation procedure for a simulated thermal-runaway alarm. Safety-critical
  8. Perform a generator fuel-system inspection, including fuel-quality sampling, consistent with NFPA 110 annual fuel testing practice.
  9. Document a generator exercise test, paralleling event, or BESS alarm response in the site EPSS/BESS log per NFPA 110 and manufacturer recordkeeping practice.
  10. Escalate a failed generator exercise test, an out-of-tolerance paralleling event, or a BESS warning-level alarm to the responsible engineering authority. Safety-critical
