Workplace Communication & Documentation

This course develops the written, verbal, and digital documentation skills required to operate safely and effectively in a shift-based critical facility environment. Students practice shift-turnover reporting, work-order documentation in a computerized maintenance management system, method-of-procedure (MOP) writing and peer review, radio and phone communication protocol during an active incident, and professional email and ticket correspondence with vendors and customers. The course covers reading technical drawings and manufacturer documentation, interpreting a root-cause analysis report, and presenting a technical finding to a non-technical audience. Emphasis is placed on precision and traceability: every entry a technician makes becomes part of an audit trail that may be reviewed by a customer, an accreditor, or an incident investigator. Students complete a capstone exercise producing a complete shift-turnover packet and a peer-reviewed MOP for a routine maintenance task, modeled on the documentation standards used across the SAVRN OctoPod platform and CMMS.
